In the digital age, we have to recognise that our technology rapidly developed over the last two decades and therefore our daily life. Based on these changes we constantly modify our media consumption. We obtain more and more possibilities (e.g. streaming) and an everyday growing supply of entertainment. About one year ago I was far away from being familiar with music genres like metal core or post hardcore. But then the following happened....
Someday, I stumbled over the music video of the track "The Realest" by the metal core band Issues. The mixture of rap-like passages at the beginning of the song, a funky bass, jazzy guitar chords and an energised, melodic chorus immediately cast a spell over me. In short, it combines many elements which catch my attention.
Once I finished my listening on Issues' Spotify profile, I went on a prolonged journey through the "related artists" list. This is a highly valuable feature on the streaming platform as I had to realise later. Due to this function, I discovered numerous bands and related genres with only a small amount of effort.
As a result of my own little story, I learned how important the streaming platforms are for exploring the world's catalogue of music. Next to it, I realised which possibilities the music industry as well as the consumer have available with such tools. The industry's players can be often heard complaining about the nearly gone CD sales. Furthermore, the streaming services like Spotify, Deezer and Apple Music are demonised by the same people. That is because of their business model and the therewith connected payout to the creatives (which is truly low). In my view, we need to leave the past behind us and force ourselves to deal with the changes in technology and consumption behaviour. The creative industry should constantly optimise the user experience and the business strategies regarding the music streaming.
Besides the exploration through the artist pages or provider recommendations (their algorithms are quite nice), user playlists are a fundamental benefit of the streaming services. That is the reason why I would like to share an additional Spotify playlist with you. During my above-mentioned journey, I collected a few rock tracks with powerful hooks (= hip-hop slang for chorus) for you. Lean back and enjoy this tiny collection! :P
